"Blankets for Refugees" Project.
At a recent meeting of the Leadership team, after much discussion and discernment, it was decided that we needed to respond tangibly to the ongoing needs of the world's desperate refugees. Our numbers are not large but we can certainly engage in significant ways as we seek the path of discipleship in responding to urgent needs. The Mennonite Central Committee has been actively involved in refugee assistance/emergency relief (as is our own UCC) for decades.
One area of great need as many nations approach the winter months is basic necessities. They are looking for blankets, many blankets. From tomorrow, Oct. 18th, through to the end of November, Springbank UC will be collecting blankets to be shipped overseas. Please respond as you are able, and as you feel called. Any donated blankets must be new or nearly new, single/twin sized are preferred approx. 152 cm X 203 cm); but double/full size are accepted (208 cm X 229 cm). Winter-weight blankets are wanted. Thank you for participating in this project! Last year the Canadian MCC sent more than 45,000 blankets to Jordan, Syria, Iraq, North Korea, and other nations.
Springbank Fall Study Group
"Experiencing the Bible Again for the First Time":
Based on the popular book by Marcus Borg, renowned Bible scholar and teacher, "Reading the Bible Again for the First Time". We're going to be gathering to study this contemporary, theologically progressive book this fall, starting right after Thanksgiving. It will be a 10-week study. Ever wondered about how the Virgin birth doctrine fits or doesn't fit your faith perspective? How about Jesus walking on water? Is the Bible all literal truth or a mixture of metaphor, poetry, hyperbole, and truth understood differently? A video component will also be part of our gatherings. Each week we'll meet for 90 minutes and prayer will be part of our gatherings, 7:30 - 9 pm. A sign-up sheet will be at the church, but we need to choose either Tuesday or Thursday nights (please indicate by contacting me or signing up). Thus we'll begin October 13th or 15th, depending on which night we choose. Final dates will be sent out in next week's devotional email. Space for 11 or 12.
